What is a credit union?

A credit union is a non-profit financial institution owned by its members.  Any income made by the credit union is returned to the members in the form of higher dividends paid to the members on savings, lower interest rates on loans or to strengthen the credit union reserves.  The members of the credit union elect a Board of Directors, whose responsibility is to set the policies of the credit union.  The Supervisory Committee responsibility is to oversee the credit union and make sure the records are accurate and internal controls are maintained.  The credit union undergoes an annual federal examination as well as an annual audit by a Certified Public Accountancy firm.

Is my account at the credit union federally insured?

All SMW 104 Federal Credit Union accounts are federally insured up to $250,000 by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), an agency of the federal government.  This insurance fund is called the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF) and is the strongest of the insurance funds.  In addition to the $250,000 federal insurance, SMW 104 Federal Credit Union has excess share insurance coverage for an additional $250,000 per account with American Share Insurance (ASI).  American Share Insurance is the nation’s largest private insurer and insures only credit unions that meet strict underwriting criteria.
